2025 Juneteenth Event: Black Book Fair & Brunch Recap

On June 21st, I got the opportunity to participate in Plates & Pages: A Black Book Fair & Brunch hosted by the lovely Indigo Kerr who is the owner of Indigo Ink Illustrations. I was looking forward to this event so much and despite the early morning storms and heatwave (it was about 90 degrees Fahrenheit!). It is a celebration of Black literature, art, and community at the Juneteenth Book Fair & Brunch.

The Fair

The event was held at The Convent (located in Detroit) which was originally built in 1929 for the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, a primarily Polish order of Catholic nuns serving Transfiguration Church & School. As the number of nuns declined, the building eventually fell into disuse and disrepair. In 2022, it was revitalized and transformed into an art and wellness hub, providing private office and studio space for health and wellness practitioners, artists, and other creatives. It also offers spacious common areas for larger gatherings and events.

The food was catered by Jamaican Soul and had a delicious menu of Pancakes, Mac & Cheese, Yams, and Fried Chicken for brunch! It was so delicious. There was also Danishes and a cake provided by Indigo as well.

I had such a great time vending at the fair and chatting with attendees at my table. The atmosphere was lively (with a great music playlist I was dancing to non-stop the whole time)! Everyone was very friendly and we had a lot of foot traffic despite the weather. I also got to raffle some Blind Date with a Books to customers which added another layer of fun.
