Hello everyone! I love visiting independent bookstores and shopping at local businesses regularly. Because it’s important to #shopsmall, here are some bookstores in the Metro Detroit area that you should visit when you’re here. Some of these shops have websites that you can shop at as well if you can’t shop in person!
Source Booksellers

Source Booksellers is a Black owned bookstore in Detroit’s Midtown district which has a niche of non-fiction books. This is one of the first niche bookstores I discovered in the area and the store is so cozy. It’s helped me to broaden my reading horizons with the wide variety non-fiction they carry!
John King Used & Rare Books

Located in Downtown Detroit, this is a bookstore that you can get lost in. Every time I visit I spend at least a couple of hours inside of it. It’s also known as Michigan’s largest used book store. It’s truly a sight to see as the building is a four-story former Advance Glove factory and houses four floors of books! This is a must visit bookstore.
Vault of Midnight

Vault of Midnight is an amazing comic shop with a great overall ambience. The design of the shop alone had me in awe when I first visited. They have a wide array of comics and graphic novels from kids to adults. They also carry a lot of new titles and anything you can’t get your hands on can be special ordered for you. The staff is fun to chat with and they offer some great suggestions. They have three stores in total located in Downtown Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Ann Arbor.
Coreander’s Children’s Bookshoppe

Coreander’s Children’s Bookshoppe located in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan carries books for babies through young adults. They also have café called, Café Meem which serves coffee and snack, and the theater adjacent to the café hosts story time and author visits. I visited this bookstore for the first time on Independent Bookstore day 2024 and it is truly a magical experience. From the whimsical murals that line the wall to the bright book displays Coreander makes for a very immersive shop experience. Though aimed at children’s books it’s definitely a bookstore that makes any adult nostalgic for their childhood favorite reads.
Schuler Books

Since 1982, Schuler Book is an independent shop with a wide array of new and used titles, plus gifts, stationery, and games. They have 4 locations in total and each store (I’ve been to two locations) I’ve visited provides its own unique experience. The staff is friendly and offers lots of great recs while also being eager to chat about books. You’ll find yourself lost in the shelves of this wonderful indie store for sure!
